Gathering mum’s scarves together was a deeply cathartic experience. Each scarf contained an individual memory. The stains, smell of her perfume, the pulls and frayed edges, all remain as part of her.
For mum, these scarves provided her with protection, they hid her pain, they supplied her with the strength to face the day. They brought warmth to her body, hugging her and protecting her from the cold. Scarves also kept her glamour alive.
I felt the need to keep mum’s scarves together. These scarves were one of her most important possessions. Now, they are a constant reminder of her existence. They were a part of her body and a reminder of all she was.
Through her absence I am reminded of her love for family. I am reminded of how lucky I am to have these memories to pass on to the future generations to come. But I cannot help but feel, Left Behind.
